Strategic ideas

Key themes

Typical plans

White builds the KIA setup (Nf3, g3, Bg2, 0-0, d3, Nbd2, e4) regardless of what Black plays. The main attacking plan is e5–f4–f5, creating a kingside pawn storm. This setup is particularly effective against the French and Sicilian as White sidesteps established theory while playing on familiar attacking territory. Black's queenside counterplay must be monitored carefully.

Move by move

  1. Nf3 — White develops flexibly, keeping options open for a KIA setup against almost anything Black plays.
  2. d5 — Black claims central space.
  3. g3 — White prepares the kingside fianchetto that defines the KIA.
  4. c5 — Black expands further in the centre and queenside.
  5. Bg2 — White completes the fianchetto, aiming at the long diagonal and Black's queenside.
  6. Nc6 — Black develops, supporting the centre.
  7. O-O — White castles into safety behind the fianchetto before committing to a central plan.
  8. e5 — Black builds a broad pawn centre.
  9. d3 — White keeps the position flexible and prepares Nbd2-e4/c4 or a later e4 break.
  10. Nf6 — Black completes development, and White will follow up with Nbd2, Re1, and the thematic e4 push toward a kingside pawn storm with f4-f5.
  11. Nbd2 — White develops the last minor piece, preparing to reroute it via f1-g3 or c4.
  12. Be7 — Black develops, preparing to castle.
  13. Re1 — White adds a rook to the e-file ahead of the central e4 push.
  14. O-O — Black castles into safety before the centre opens.
  15. e4 — White finally plays the central e4 break, the last piece of the KIA setup.
  16. d4 — Black closes the centre rather than allow further central tension.
  17. Nc4 — White reroutes the knight to c4, eyeing the newly weak d6 square and supporting a future b4 push.
  18. Qc7 — Black develops the queen, preparing …b5 to meet White's queenside ambitions.
