Strategic ideas

Key themes

Typical plans

Black typically delays …e5 and instead builds queenside counterplay with …a5–a4 while White storms the kingside. The asymmetric pawn structures create rich imbalances where the faster attacker wins. Black must time the …d5 or …e5 breaks precisely to avoid being mated before counterplay materialises.

Move by move

  1. e4 — White claims the centre and opens diagonals for the bishop and queen immediately.
  2. c5 — Black challenges d4 asymmetrically, aiming for genuine winning chances rather than a level, symmetrical game.
  3. Nf3 — White develops naturally and prepares d4 to open the centre against the c5 pawn.
  4. d6 — Black supports a later …e5 break and gives the f6-knight a safe route without walking into an e4–e5 tempo gain.
  5. d4 — White strikes the centre at once, inviting …cxd4 to gain time and space.
  6. cxd4 — Black trades the c-pawn for central influence, following through on the plan set by 2…c5.
  7. Nxd4 — White recaptures with the knight, centralising it on an excellent square while eyeing c6 and b5.
  8. Nf6 — Black develops and attacks e4, forcing White to spend a move defending it.
  9. Nc3 — White defends e4 the natural way while completing minor-piece development.
  10. a6 — The Najdorf's signature move: it rules out Nb5 and Bb5+ intrusions and keeps both …b5 queenside expansion and …e5 in reserve.
  11. Be3 — White develops toward the queenside, preparing the thematic English Attack setup.
  12. e5 — Black claims central space, gaining a tempo on the knight and fighting for the initiative.
  13. Nb3 — White retreats the knight out of any future …d5 tricks, eyeing d4 and c5.
  14. Be6 — Black develops, challenging the b3-knight and preparing to meet Qd2/O-O-O with counterplay.
  15. f3 — White supports e4 and prepares a big pawn storm on the kingside.
  16. Nbd7 — Black develops the other knight, keeping the f6-knight's options open and preparing …b5.
  17. Qd2 — White prepares to castle queenside, connecting the rooks for the coming attack.
  18. b5 — Black launches the thematic queenside expansion, gaining space and preparing …b4 to hit the c3-knight.
