Three pawns walk forward and the Spanish bishop simply never gets out
Also known as Ruy Lopez trap, Noahs Ark, Spanish bishop trap.
The main line
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.d4 b5 6.Bb3 Nxd4 7.Nxd4 exd4 8.Qxd4 c5 9.Qd5 Be6 10.Qc6+ Bd7 11.Qd5 c4
Strategic ideas
- Punish White for grabbing on d4 with the queen in the Ruy López
- Trap the b3-bishop with the ordinary pawns on a6, b5 and c4
- Chase the queen with …c5 and …Be6, gaining time for the pawn advance
- Win a piece with three pawn moves and no tactics at all
- Learn why Ruy López players never play an early Qxd4
Key themes
- Tactics — The trap is entirely concrete — a piece gets caught in a net of pawns and can't get out
- Counterattack — Black hands over the centre and traps the piece that comes to collect it
- Positional — There's no sacrifice here; the bishop is caught by a completely natural pawn structure
Typical plans
The name comes from the trap being old as the ark, and it's the reason every Ruy López player learns not to snatch on d4 with the queen. Black trades on d4, invites Qxd4, and then chases the queen with …c5 and …Be6 — each move gaining a tempo. Meanwhile the pawns on a6, b5 and c4 quietly close in on the b3-bishop, which suddenly has no squares at all. Three ordinary pawn moves and the Spanish bishop is simply gone.
Move by move
- e4 — White claims the centre.
- e5 — Black meets it symmetrically.
- Nf3 — White develops, attacking e5.
- Nc6 — Black defends the pawn.
- Bb5 — White plays the Ruy López.
- a6 — Black asks the question, gaining time on the queenside.
- Ba4 — White retreats, keeping the bishop on the a2–g8 diagonal.
- d6 — Black shores up e5.
- d4 — White strikes at the centre.
- b5 — Black grabs queenside space and forces the bishop to move again. The pawns on a6 and b5 are quietly building the net.
- Bb3 — White retreats to b3. This is the square the bishop will regret.
- Nxd4 — Black takes on d4, opening the centre.
- Nxd4 — White recaptures with the knight.
- exd4 — Black takes back, leaving the pawn on d4 for White's queen.
- Qxd4 — White grabs the pawn with the queen. This is the mistake — the queen is now the only piece on d4, and it's about to be chased around while the net closes.
- c5 — Black hits the queen with tempo.
- Qd5 — White moves to d5, still active and eyeing the loose rook and f7.
- Be6 — Black develops with tempo again, hitting the queen a second time.
- Qc6+ — White checks, trying to keep the initiative alive.
- Bd7 — Black blocks, and the queen still has no safe home.
- Qd5 — White retreats to d5, out of immediate danger.
- c4 — Black plays …c4, and the trap snaps shut. The bishop on b3 is boxed in by the pawns on a6, b5 and c4: a2 and c2 are blocked by White's own pawns, Ba4 drops to …bxa4, and Bxc4 drops to …bxc4. Every square it has loses it, so Black wins a piece for three pawn moves. Old as the ark, and it still works.
Where the line leads
White's plans
- Recapture on d4 with the knight, not the queen — the whole trap needs the queen on d4
- If the bishop is on b3 and Black's pawns are on a6 and b5, watch c4 like a hawk
- Give the bishop an escape square with a4 or c3 before the net closes
Black's plans
- Chase the queen with …c5 and …Be6, gaining a tempo with each move
- Push …c4 to close the net — the bishop on b3 has nowhere to go
- Don't rush; the pawns do the work and the bishop isn't going anywhere
