French Defence openings
1.e4 e6 — Black builds a pawn chain, concedes space and plans to break it open with …c5 and …f6. The light-squared bishop is the famous problem piece, and the whole opening is a long argument about whether that matters. The Winawer, Advance and Tarrasch are three different answers from White, and none of them wins a pawn or a tempo by force.
